Open plan living is one of the biggest challenges in contemporary home building design. Flipping the location of the kitchen was the design choice our team made when designing this home .
Our aim was to make the kitchen open to living areas and become connected to the backyard. The original house was disjointed and had a lot of closed off spaces and rooms.
We designed high ceilings and implemented 2 large skylight wells consisting of 4 Velux sky lights in each, to create vaulted ceilings and an element of height.
The home owners liked the look of a Hamptons home, however they wanted to have a modern take on this. To give this home the modern look they were after, we went for monument French doors and windows as opposed to white. For the kitchen joinery we picked a pale grey colour that ties in with the Hamptons/modern look as well as going with a colour that will not date.
The laundry we made the choice to go with dark surfaces for the floor and bench top given that it is a utilities room.
The flipping and the colour scheme achieved a successful Modern Hamptons contemporary home.
